TGI Friday Seminar: Segregation, Distrust and Anti-Police Protests across the U.S.

Who: Dr. Helen Potts & Dr. Michael Thompson, Department of Sociology, University of North Texas

When: October 23rd, 3-4 PM

Where: EESAT 130

Why? What may explain current high levels of anti-police protest concerning their seemingly biased and violent treatment of racial minority groups? In this seminar, Dr. Helen Potts and Dr. Michael Thompson will compare regions across the U.S. to examine whether a lack of social capital - specifically relationships of trust in local institutions and between racial groups- may account for why some areas have higher incidences of anti-police protest than others. The speakers will do this through use of county-level demographic and public opinion data available from public sources as well as newspaper reports on anti-police protests between 1995 and 2015.

Dr. Potts is Senior Lecturer and Director of Undergraduate Program in the Department of Sociology at UNT and studies social capital, social organizations, job performance and conflict resolution. Dr. Thompson is Assistant Professor of Sociology at UNT and studies the political economy, social stratification, mobility and economic development.
